Students should begin testing in junior year. Start with diagnostics—SAT in December and ACT in early February—to see which exam fits better. The SAT favors slower-paced, reasoning-based questions, while the ACT suits students who read quickly and handle a faster, more direct test format. After diagnostics, plan official testing March–August of 11th grade, usually taking the chosen exam twice for the strongest results.
